An Almost Rainy Day

The clouds rolled in yesterday and we quickly cleaned up the backyard in preparation for the BIG STORM.

Which, in SoCal, basically means a few scattered showers and cold (as in low 60's).
I decided to make my men-folk weep. With joy, this time.

I made some bread dough.
Sauteed some sweet italian sausage with a chopped onion, let it cool a bit and spread it on top.
Added some sliced, fresh mozzarella.
Topped that some fresh basil, though if I wasn't catering to my youngest child (who is worth catering to, btw), I would have used fresh spinach.

And then started to roll it up...
...and up.
Till it was all snug. And not 'snug as a bug' cuz that would be gross when referring to food.
Put it on a baking sheet lined with parchment and tuck the ends under.
Brush it with a beaten egg.
And plop it into the oven, right underneath some buttermilk chicken. Bake it at 375 for 30 - 40 minutes.
Pull it out and let it cool for just a bit, arming yourself with a baseball bat and dirty looks so the men-folk that take over your house don't try and eat it all right then and there.
Slice it up...
...and watch grown men (and young boys) weep with joy.

Oh...and the storm ended up blowing right over head, but that's OK.

  1. Sounds good! I think however I would go vegie with it. Mushrooms, spinach, cheese, tomatoes, onions and dark olives would be good. Of course it seems that everyone with blood relations to the Barron side of the family hates olives so I would most likely have to lose the olives.

Now at this point Cheryl is thinking, what do you mean you? You can't even boil water anymore without help!

  2. Mike means he would like someone to make this for him, since he no longer even boils water...unless it is for his french coffee press and boiled to his exact temperature specifications (yes, he takes the water temp). He has a daughter who is just like him. Over the Thanksgiving weekend she seriously asked, "How do you make pasta?" She did not know how to boil it in a pot of water. Liz (who was happy to have someone else do her cooking for the long weekend) said, "You've got to be kidding!" Either we need to get cooking classes back in the school system, or I need to give some more cooking lessons.

I will admit that my "cooking" tonight was hardly that--heating up Trader Joe's mandarin orange chicken and brown rice, with some green beans steamed in the microwave. However, it satisfied Kate's craving for Panda Express orange chicken and got dinner on the table before she had to go back to school.

  3. Cooking classes in school? I think they will be cutting that, plus shop, art and music (gasp from the houseful of boys household), and even some gym.

xerxes, you're right about the olives!
