Homemade Pasta

Spring cleaning unearthed an old hand crank pasta machine that I had packed away long, long ago and it was just begging to be used.

And not for play-doh, which was what it had been used for last...but for honest to goodness real pasta.

While Matthew kneaded, I threw together a pretty simple bolognese.

And here lies lie #1.  Bolognese is not simple.  It tastes simple but it involves many steps which is why I don't often make it, but you can't make lasagne bolognese without bolognese.  Just sayin'.

Next up...bechemel.  Easy?  Yes.  Yet another pan to wash? YES.

Helloooo pasta machine!

The dough needs to rest for 30 minutes or so.  Long enough to wash round one of dishes.

Then the fun begins...crank it through the machine over and over and over.

This IS fast and simple...no lie.

I was making lasagne sheets so we just laid them on wax paper to dry a bit.

Brian helped with the cranking.  He's cute AND useful.

The cranker (who was cranky because he was hungry) cranked out some linguini, too.

Take my advice.

DO NOT SKIMP ON THE FLOUR or you'll have to start over.

The result was one large bowl of pasta...

...and one large lasagna.

The real deal is that this took FOREVER to put together and by the time it came out of the oven we had a major case of raging hungry men folk and one extremely grumpy mama so I didn't let it set and it was a gloppy mess.

Oh well.  Can't win them all.

Lunch the next day was good, though.
